Real Talk: Honest Answers
You have questions about midwifery services. We have honest answers. Whether you are curious, nervous, or just doing your research, nothing is off-limits here.
The Basics
1. What is a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM)? Think of us as the experts in healthy, natural birth. A CPM is trained specifically to care for low-risk pregnancies outside of the hospital.
CPM (Me): Focuses on home birth, holistic health, and safety without unnecessary intervention.
CNM: A nurse-midwife who usually works in a hospital.
OB/GYN: A surgeon/doctor who specializes in high-risk pregnancies and C-sections. We are all important parts of the system; we just serve different needs.
2. Are you a doula? No, I am a medical provider. * A Note on Language: You won't hear us use the word "doula." The word historically translates to "female slave." We believe birth work is about empowerment, not servitude. We use the term Birth Companion.
The Distinction: The Birth Companion is the Coach, and the Midwife is the Captain.
The Birth Companion (Support): Their focus is your comfort. They provide emotional coaching but cannot perform medical tasks.
The Midwife (Medical Safety): My focus is your health. I run labs, monitor heart tones, carry emergency equipment, and support you as you bring your baby earthside.
The Sweet Water Advantage: With my background in birth support and as an Occupational Therapist, you get the heart of a companion with the hands and license of a medical expert.
3. How long have you been a midwife? I officially became a licensed midwife in 2026, but I have been protecting growing families for over 20 years.
Since 2005: Birth companion keeping the labor space calm and grounded.
10+ Years: Licensed Occupational Therapist helping your body and nervous system recover.
Class of 2026: B.S. in Midwifery with fresh, razor-sharp medical training. You get the wisdom of a 20-year birth veteran combined with the latest evidence-based safety.
4. Do I need a Birth Companion if I have you? We highly recommend it. While I focus on your clinical safety, a Birth Companion focuses 100% on your physical comfort.
The Perk: We believe in them so much that we offer a Success Credit off your final bill if you hire a professional Birth Companion.
5. Do you deliver babies in the hospital? No. Sweet Water specializes in home birth only. If a hospital birth becomes safer for you, we offer Collaborative Care to support you alongside the hospital team. 👉🏾 Explore Collaborative Care
6. Do you draw labs? Yes, right in your home. We handle the required blood work during your regular visits.
7. Do you do ultrasounds? I don't, but I do require an early dating scan and a 20-week anatomy scan. * VIP Perk: For VIP clients, an in-home diagnostic sonographer is included.
Standard: I'll refer you to a local clinic to use your insurance, or you can add the cozy in-home sonographer for an additional fee.
8. Is Sweet Water Midwifery Services right for me? We might be your perfect village if:
You choose power and protection: You want to be actively involved in your care, but you deeply respect clinical boundaries. You embrace necessary safety tools (like required labs, ultrasounds, and clinical checks) because you know this information is how we protect your baby best.
You honor your body: You know birth is a major athletic event. You are ready to nourish yourself and do the work to train for it.
You want a guide, not a guard: You want a relationship built on trust and mutual respect.

Safety, Inclusivity & "What Ifs"
9. What if something goes wrong? Home birth is safe, but we prepare for everything. I am trained in CPR, newborn resuscitation, and birth emergencies. We bring the same emergency gear a birth center has: oxygen, IV fluids, and medication.
The Transfer Plan: If we see a "yellow flag," we transfer you to the hospital calmly. We go with you and advocate for your birth plan, and support you as you get safely settled; when neccessary ensuring a seamless clinical handoff.
10. What does "High Risk" actually mean? Home birth is for healthy, low-risk pregnancies. Conditions like pre-existing diabetes, pre-term labor, or placenta issues mean the hospital is the safest place for you. 👉🏾 Claim Your Free Consult to Talk it Through
11. Is it messy? No. We are experts at "birth hygiene." We use waterproof liners and chux pads. When we leave, we start a load of laundry and take out the trash.
12. What if I can't handle the pain? You are stronger than you realize, but labor is intense. Birth is as much a mental journey as a physical one. Just like running a marathon, the training you do during your pregnancy is what carries you through.
The Preparation: We will empower you with the clinical knowledge and roadmap along the way, but your personal preparation is key. We highly recommend childbirth education classes so you feel confident and ready for the intense, transformative work ahead.
The Support: Your partner and Birth Companion will be your hands-on comfort team (providing massage and holding space in the birth tub), allowing me to focus entirely on keeping you and your baby clinically safe.
Real Talk: If your body tells you it truly needs an epidural, we listen. That is never a failure; we will simply transfer to the hospital together to get you the relief you need.
13. What if I tear? For common tears, I repair them right in your own bed with numbing medication. In the rare case of a complex tear, we transfer to the hospital to ensure you get specialist care.
14. What if I transfer? Does that mean I "failed"? Real Talk: Absolutely not; using a medical safety tool is powerful parenting. * The Mindset: If your journey moves to the hospital, it simply means you chose the safest path for your baby.
Seamless Handoff: I go with you to ensure a smooth clinical transition. I will advocate for you as far as hospital policies allow, and our tailored care picks right back up for your healing once you are home. You are a warrior, period.
15. Do we miss the "standard" newborn tests by birthing at home? Not at all. We provide the exact clinical safety checks required by the state.
The Clinical Standard: Within 24 hours of birth, we complete the Required State Metabolic Screening (PKU), Heart Screening (CCHD), and Hearing Screening right in your own bed.
The Financial Value: In a hospital, these tests often trigger out-of-pocket costs ranging from $300 to $900+.
The Curated Edge: You save the stress of traveling to a cold clinic with a 24-hour-old baby. We bring the tech to you.
16. How do you support my mental health and nervous system after birth? Standard care checks your physical healing at 6 weeks and says goodbye; we know that is not enough. * The OT Lens: Because I am also an Occupational Therapist, we actively monitor your nervous system, sensory overload, and emotional well-being for a full 12 months.
Proactive Protection: We don't wait for postpartum anxiety or depression to become a crisis. We check in on your sleep, your mood, and your transition into parenthood at every single visit.
17. Do you support diverse and LGBTQ+ families? Absolutely. Sweet Water Midwifery is a deeply inclusive and welcoming sanctuary. As a Black Midwife, I built this practice because there is a severe lack of diversity and equitable care in maternal health.
Your Family is Celebrated: We honor all family structures, identities, and pronouns. Whether you are a Black or Brown family seeking a provider who understands your specific needs, a queer family, or a white family valuing deeply equitable care, you are safe here.
Advocacy & Respect: We believe true healthcare requires deep respect for who you are. We listen, we affirm, and we protect your peace fiercely.

Logistics & Money
18. How much does it cost? Do you take insurance? We believe every family deserves high-quality, personalized care. * The Investment: My fee covers your entire journey, from prenatal visits to birth, plus a full year of postpartum support. 👉🏾 Explore Your Investment
Insurance: I provide a "Superbill" for you to submit for reimbursement and happily accept HSA and FSA cards.
19. Why is your investment higher than other midwives? Because you are getting two experts in one.
The Midwife + OT Combo: I care for your whole nervous system and your physical healing.
12 Months of Support: We stay by your side for a full year.
Long-term Growth: Through Nestling Therapy Services, your baby gets expert developmental screenings until age five. Bypassing the red tape, giving you 5 years of proactive, built-in milestone tracking at zero extra cost.
20.What does it mean when you "protect the First 1,000 Days"? Science proves the window from conception to age two shapes your baby’s entire neurodevelopmental foundation. Read the clinical research here 👉🏾 1,000 Days.
The Gap: Standard care stops at six weeks, leaving this critical phase unsupported.
The Sweet Water Standard: As a Midwife and Master's-level OT, I fiercely protect this entire window.
The Execution: We curate this time with deep prenatal cellular nourishment, 12 full months of postpartum nervous system healing, and expert infant milestone tracking up to age 5.
21. How do we communicate between appointments? We use a premium, bespoke communication system so you always feel connected while we both maintain healthy boundaries.
Routine Care: You have access to a secure client portal to message me anytime. I respond to all non-urgent questions during my standard office hours (Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri: 8 AM - 2 PM).
The 24/7 Clinical Line: For clinical emergencies or when labor begins, you have a dedicated, direct line to me that is always on.
22. Can we barter or trade? Yes! In special cases, I am open to bartering for goods or services (like farm goods or trade skills) that support the practice.
23. What if I live outside of Kentucky? I serve the surrounding areas and am even willing to get licensed in your state to support you! * Travel Logistics: For our families living 50+ miles away, standard mileage and an overnight hotel fee will apply. This ensures I can be well-rested, safely on-call in your area, and fully energized to welcome your baby.
24. Can I bring my kids to appointments? Yes, please! We love meeting your village. Whether it’s your toddler or your partner, they are welcome.
